190th Anniversary of the Long Island Railroad Celebration Ceremony In-Person
The Hicksville Historical Society is celebrating the 190th anniversary of the Long Island Rail Road beginning at 11am on October 8 at the Hicksville Public Library. This date marks 69 years since Operation Changeover in 1955 which is when the LIRR officially retired steam locomotives from service. Steam locomotives #35 and #39 were the official “retirees.” At this ceremony, you'll see:
- Steam locomotive #39 will be rang
- a portrait of Valentine Hicks will also be unveiled
- 0 Scale models of #35 and #39 will be displayed
- Historic photo displays on community walls
LIRR President Rob Free, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino, and more will be in attendance. Come learn about local history - all are invited to attend this historical event!
